So much of our time is spent connecting the frontend to the database—writing queries, managing types, ensuring everything stays in sync. It’s a process that can feel tedious and error-prone. That’s why I’ve been exploring the combination of Next.js and Prisma, and I’m convinced it’s one of the most effective ways to build modern, type-safe web applications. Setting up Prisma in a Next.js project is refreshingly straightforward. You start by installing the Prisma CLI and initializing it within your project. This creates a prisma directory with a schema.prisma file—your single source of truth for the database structure. Here, you define your data model. For example, if you were building a blog, your schema might include a Post model.

This approach isn’t limited to API routes. You can use Prisma seamlessly in getServerSideProps or getStaticProps for server-rendered or statically generated pages. Imagine building a blog homepage that pre-renders the latest articles. The data fetching is clean, and the types flow through your entire application.
